The festivities in honor of Our Lady date back to 1710 in Mangaratiba, according to historical records. This traditional festivity takes place on September 8 with a high mass and processions over land and by sea, throughout the local beaches and districts. The beautiful baroque and rococo church with its façade covered in Portuguese ceramic tiles opens its doors for the patron saint’s image to issue forth and inspire the numerous visitors who are assembled on the church square. Stalls displaying regional food and tidbits, fairs, shows and performances by dance groups liven the town’s historical center. The event is organized by the Diocese of itaguaí and the Parish Church of Nossa Senhora da Guia, with support from the Mangaratiba town hall and stakeholders.
