Festa do Divino in Angra dos Reis

Impossible to select the best: in Paraty or in Angra dos Reis

Edinho Lima

The Festa do Divino Espírito Santo was created in the 14th century by queen Isabel in Alenquer, Portugal and was brought to Angra dos Reis from the Azores. It takes place here since the 18th century and has absorbed Portuguese and African traditions. After its revival in 1940 it has become more and more grandiose. Novenas and masses are said during the ten days, presided by the boy-emperor who arrives in the town by boat. The people attend the religious ceremonies and take part in the festivity’s profane events, consisting in traditional dances such as coquinhos, lanceiros, jardineiras, velhos and marujos, performed on a stage symbolizing the “Divine Empire”.

Fireworks, church bells ringing, stalls displaying regional food and beverages; it is a genuine fair that attracts crowds of residents and tourists. This organized festive activity is the scenario for the “Empire” set up in the town center and the Santa Luzia quay in honor of the divine Holy Spirit and the boy-emperor, who is selected by drawing lots among young people from the Catholic community.

There are folk characters such as Vaca Malhada, Burrinha and Bate-moleque that participate in the typical dances: coquinhos, jardineiras, marujos, lanceiros and velhos. Groups of Divino merrymakers, church representatives and an ample public from all of the town’s surrounding areas follow the parade down the streets decorated with red and white pennants as well as with Festa do Divino symbols. Churches and windows of public buildings as well as the homes in the town center are also dressed for the occasion. The festivities last throughout Pentecost Sunday.
