Paraty International Literary Festival – Flip

Multiple quality features for all ages

The first Flip was held in 2003, and definitely inserted Brazil in the circuit of international literary festivals. Roughly 200 events are held during the festival’s five days: encounters with writers, discussions, new book releases, shows, workshops, films, presentations by schools and several simultaneous actions. The main stage receives writers, filmmakers, journalists, historians and visual artists, who get together to discuss and exchange views on literature and its trends. In 2014, Flip was attended by 47 authors, of which 27 were domestic and 20 from overseas, and the chief features in this edition included humor, architecture, science, indigenous thinking and criticism of power.

The popular round tables are broadcast in real time through the Internet and cover topics, among many others, such as preservation of heritage, education and urban infrastructure, the key targets of Associação Casa Azul, an OSCIP (Public Interest Civil Society Organization) organized based on actions put into practice in 1994, and the event’s coordinator.

Flipinha was created in 2004 and is an offshoot of the festival, with the task of attracting new readers and acting as a means of disseminating culture and knowledge among children. In particular, it covers approximately 13,000 pupils from private and public schools in Paraty. However, during the festival days activities also involve children from other areas, who congregate in a large tent known as the Flipinha tent, for meetings with writers and performances by the local schools. It has also become a tradition on the Friday of the Flip week to hold Arte na Praça, a project by Biblioteca Casa Azul held at the Praça da Matriz. On this occasion the area is converted into a stage. There, it is possible to meet authors and participate in workshops, games and ciranda circles, forming a rich background that captivates the young and old alike.

Participation by young people in this literary event has been assured since 2009, with the creation of FlipZona. By means of its own program of events and encounters with writers, filmmakers and new media professionals, it contributes to the Flip editions through workshops and a unique news coverage of the festival. With its youthful and irreverent vision, the so-called Central FlipZona relies for each edition on the enthusiasm of over 50 local youths involved in producing editorial and audiovisual contents published in the flipzona.wordpress.com blog.
Activities by Flipinha and FlipZona, however, extend much beyond the five days of Flip editions in Paraty. Both are the outcome of permanent educational actions held in the town throughout the year by Biblioteca Casa Azul, focused on an improved quality of life for the new generations.
