The festival was created in 2004 and inspired by European counterparts that are held outside of the main cities. It takes place in Angra dos Reis using the backdrop of the region’s assorted sea and mountain scenery. The result is a real marathon of theater performances that enthrall the local public as well as tourists who flock to the region on this special occasion.
Covering over 100 performances during approximately 17 days of activities on the stages put in place in different parts of the town, the audience is estimated at 100,000 people including tourists and residents, who are given the opportunity of viewing national premieres and local productions alike, in addition to dance and music expressions and workshops, and other activities related to theater.
Events take place on the main stage of the 1500-seat Teatro SESC, on the alternative stage that can seat another 500 spectators and in the nightclub tent with its over 4000 visitors each evening. As in the case of other festivals, Fitinha, a special version dedicated to children was created.
In 2010 FITA was granted the Prêmio de Cultura do Governo do Estado do Rio de Janeiro award in the Theater class.
