This group, which began with 20 members, was founded in 2001 for amateur and professional photographers, and currently totals 40 active members of several ages and walks of life, who meet for an exchange of experiences and go on photography tours across the region, besides other activities.

One of the Association’s objectives is to encourage photographers in Angra dos Reis to unite. The group also holds high-level professional courses, invites prominent speakers in the world of photography and holds three competitions per year with a view to encourage and diffuse the art of photography.

With this whole crowd snapping pictures, it is easy to imagine the collection of photographs that will ensue, which also assists in preserving the region’s history and culture. A portion of this valuable material is displayed to the public in frequent exhibitions held in the town’s cultural venues. In one of its most important works, the group spent one year taking pictures of the Atlantic Coast Rain Forest, which resulted in a beautiful calendar with selected images from a fantastic store acquired only through this one experience.

Afocar is leading a model social project, the Fotógrafo Cidadão, which benefits young people from needy communities. The 40 selected pupils were given cameras during the course, besides lessons free of charge, with the purpose of narrating local history through their own eyes. The top ten pupils will be given grants to attend a professional course at Afocar, and the top five from the professional course will be monitors in the following courses, entitling them to wear with pride the much sought after black t-shirt.
