The great star is the banana

An almost mandatory stop for visitors to Mangaratiba, the house facing Parque das Ruínas and also known as the banana preserves factory, is always prepared to welcome guests and local residents to taste the traditional goods sold there.

Bananas are the stars in the premises and may be tasted in different forms: dried bananas, with or without sugar added, banana preserve, also with or without sugar added, compotes, jam and the unusual banana chips, a slightly salted option. In addition to sweet versions, the factory also sells coarse or fine cassava meal that imparts a special flavor to the traditional farofa (toasted cassava meal), besides a section that sells hard liquors: cachaça and banana liqueur.

There are other preserves on offer such as those made from papaya, pumpkin and navel oranges, and liqueurs with other fruit flavors, such as passion fruit, cinnamon, genipap and assai.

Agroindústria de Mangaratiba is a cooperative of registered artisans who produce typical goods under strict hygienic standards and with selected fruits. Bananas are obviously the key ingredient. The area has also reserved a small corner to sell and exhibit regional handicrafts.

The factory opens on business days only but visits may be scheduled, in particular for groups. Visitors to this spot often repeat that they had a first-hand introduction to the value of bananas.
