ALAMBIQUE PARATIANA

A label that recalls the drink, the town and the wife

Paulo Eduardo Gama, more widely known as Casé is a member of a family with a tradition in producing cachaça and home-made sweets. By means of his energy and enterprise he has expanded business and is currently the owner of Alambique Paratiana with its four shops, one at the distillery and the other three in strategic locations in the historical town center.

Casé was previously a producer of the Maré Alta cachaça, in a partnership with Brazilian royal family member Dom João de Orleans e Bragança. He subsequently made his own way, and in 1999 introduced the Paratiana label, in reference to the town and a special tribute to his wife Ana.

The distillery is located in one of Paraty’s most beautiful areas, the Pedra Branca valley, close to the waterfalls that bear the same name, and warmly welcomes visitors for a tour of the production process. Only three varieties of the 30 registered cachaça brands are currently marketed: Paratiana, Mulatinha and Labareda. A number of home-made sweets prepared by Casé’s mother are also on sale under the Doces da Pequetita brand.

These delights and many others may be tasted and acquired at the distillery or the three shops in town: Armazém da Cachaça (corner of Rua da Lapa and Rua do Comércio), Empório da Cachaça (Rua Dr. Samuel Costa, 22) and Cana Caiana (Rua do Comércio, 100). All three are well appointed with charming decoration and ample shelves laden with cachaça from numerous origins, in addition to artisanal beer, liqueurs, peppers, home-made sweets and even tobacco, among other wares. Each shop has an extra feature and one of these, Museu da Cachaça, is being organized in the upper storey of Empório da Cachaça with over 5000 labels from all over Brazil. Part of this collection is already on display organized by theme and is open to visitors.

The well known Paratiana has the Inmetro Seal (Geographic Indication seal), has been awarded several prizes and is found in different sized bottles in the Gold (aged in oak casks), Silver (jequitibá casks), Caramel and Gabriela versions. Production is 65,000 liters each harvest and only what is known as the distillery’s “core” is marketed. A new brand will be launched shortly for a cachaça stored in amburana casks, which eliminate acidity and result in a sweeter drink.

In addition to disseminating this traditional and historical drink, Alambique Paratiana also provides its visitors with a variety of the region’s home-made goods.
