A true oasis of colors, weavings and textures; a shop specializing in indigenous art, displays and markets a large variety of genuine tribal items from throughout Brazil, in particular hammocks and wooden benches from the Xingu region, wooden sculptures of animals and basketware from the guarani communities, pottery or wooden utensils, musical and hunting instruments, masks and attire, plus a colorful collection of necklaces, rings, earrings and bracelets crafted in a variety of materials.

The shop includes a special niche with garments and accessories as well as publications from Instituto Socioambiental – ISA (an OSCIP or Civil Society Public Service Entity), literature and books on indigenous arts and traditions.

The pleasant owner Nina Taterka has great pleasure in receiving visitors and explaining the origin of each item.

Nina explained that she welcomes humble people who are attracted by items that activate their memories and who remark “We used to have a basin like this,” or “My grandmother had a sieve such as this.” She also caters for people who value larger items such as sculptured hardwood benches shaped as tapirs or panthers, possibly costing as much as R$ 7000. A number of typical indigenous cookery items are also on offer, such as uvaia jam, cambuci pepper and Cairu ice-cream from the state of Pará, with exotic flavors such as Brazil nut, tapioca, cupuaçu, bacuri, açaí and others.

A further activity sponsored by Armazém Paraty occasionally on Sundays is the Moitará, a barter fair. The Xingu Indians have a habit of bartering or moitarar. The fair’s purpose is to encourage spontaneous exchanges at fair prices.

On this same occasion a sale is also held of native items. This combination of culture, tradition and modernity marks the Armazém as a mandatory visit for your stay in Paraty.
