Volunteer work to develop capoeira

The Association is located in the district of Monte Serrat and is supported by the excellent volunteer work undertaken by Jairo Fernandes, who obtained the free lease of a local state school that had been closed for four years. With the assistance of community partners, he restored the premises that now house a number of activities: capoeira, taekwondo for senior citizens, a jugglers’ circus, break, ballroom and Zouk dancing,

Maintenance is provided by donations of materials, paint and appliances, making the area suitable for practicing the activities, free of charge and supervised by volunteer teachers.

Mestre Garnisé spent four years in Japan as a capoeira instructor and was a volunteer in the activity in that country. He was respected and admired by the media, as evidenced by several reports published in Japanese magazines from Tokyo and Yokohama. He has been practicing the noble art of capoeira since he was aged 34 and continues to follow the lessons by his mentor Mestre Cabeça.

He was recently appointed the head counselor of Conselho de Mestres de Capoeira do Rio de Janeiro, subordinated to IPHAN – the national historical and artistic heritage institution – and has given lessons to the Brazilian army’s Special Forces as well as to parachute brigades in Rio de Janeiro.

It is worthwhile visiting Delfim Marra square neighboring the Association to enjoy the fun, the sound of berimbaus and the lively capoeira circles. This is, according to Mestre Garnisé, a practice that encourages discipline and citizenship among the region’s younger population.
