ASSOCIAÇÃO CULTURAL RAUL POMPEIA – ACRP

A literary reference that lives up to this illustrious personality

Divulgação: Associação Cultural Raul Pompeia

The Association was founded in April 2003 under the name of Projeto de Resgate à Memória Cultural da Nossa Cidade – in honor of the town’s cultural heritage – at the time when the founder and first chairman José Mário dos Santos managed a radio program on curious events and facts related to the culture and history of Angra dos Reis.

The name of locally born writer, journalist and abolitionist Raul Pompeia was later added to the entity in October 2010, whereby it became known as Associação Cultural Raul Pompeia – ACRP, with its by-laws, headquarters, several classes of members and the title of academicians for these representatives of its 40 patrons. Chair number 1 allocated to the illustrious namesake was occupied by the chairman.

The entity has kept busy in performing its mission of encouraging literature by means of, for example, Concurso Nacional de Poesia ou Prosa Raul Pompeia, Feira Literária Raul Pompeia, with its fourth edition planned for 2015 – and special events during the Maestro Galloway week, in addition to the publication of a regular magazine and the publication of several books, such as As ideias abolicionistas de Raul Pompeia by Alexandre Moraes, edited in 2013 under the project celebrating the writer’s 150th anniversary. Lectures, encounters and awards are also some of the routine actions encouraging the appreciation of literature.

Another source of pride for the Association is the Raul Pompeia library with its collection of over three thousand books available to users. The Association’s collection also includes rare editions of French literature, mostly provided through a partnership between ACRP and the Academia Brasileira de Letras, in which the patron of chair number 33 is Raul Pompeia.

Future projects include mainly Centro Cultural Raul Pompeia, scheduled for construction in Jacuecanga. A further project in progress, under an Eletronuclear company sponsorship and partnered by Editora Nobel, is the creation of a mobile children’s library to encourage the young ones to develop a taste for reading from an early age. Visits to the Association are always welcome.
