An inhabitant of Paraty for ten years, Amarante has spent many years in the world’s larger cities such as Paris, New York and Montreal, where he delved into the universe of the arts and was dedicated to his great passion: Painting.

During his career, he returned a number of times to Brazil and held exhibitions in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Salvador. His first international exhibition was held in 1983 in a gallery in Paris, where he was awarded the Aide à la Première Exposition prize granted by France’s Ministry of Culture. From then on he has built a respected resume and has taken his works to galleries in France, Germany and the USA.

Having wandered halfway around the world, destiny had graced him by settling the artist in Paraty, following three previous attempts. Currently Amarante lives solely for his artistic activities and feels entirely assimilated. What most captivates the artist is the fact that “Paraty is a live city”… This is not a museum town. It is humanized in a way not found anywhere in the world…”

Amarante refers to himself as self-taught and his painting style is abstract. His works using acrylic on canvas are intense, with striking colors and traces very well harmonized. An interesting detail is that he will not use a white canvas! It must first be given an initial tone before starting a picture.

The artist’s studio is open to visitors by previous arrangement and provides an excellent chance to view a good number of his canvasses, to see him fully exercising his creativity or simply to speak to the artist and enjoy his works.
