Music and water colors in perfect harmony

A graduate in industrial design, José Andreas has been a publicity firm illustrator and art director. Another of his passions is music, which has influenced him since he was 10 years old, when he exchanged a bicycle for a guitar. Still very young, he played the bass in a rock band for four years. In those days he created Tangerina, a t-shirt brand with his own designs, and opened a shop in Paraty in 1997. In addition to keeping busy with his t-shirts, he used to play as a hobby with the region’s musicians. A year later, he discovered the watercolor technique and this became his occupation, in works that depicted the town’s streets in former times, portraying characters and venues of the past.

Andreas has also been a director of Casa de Cultura de Paraty, and held two successful cultural events, including an exhibition in 2005 of his own creations that used Brazil’s history as the theme. In that same year he acquired a double bass and learned to play this instrument. In 2007, he opened his studio in the historical town center and held lessons on drawing and painting, besides exhibiting his works. During the evenings he played in the town’s bars and restaurants.

Both activities inspired him to combine them, and in 2009 he created the Brasil em Aquarelas project, depicting the history of Brazil. The event started with a musical performance while his pictures were projected onto a large screen. Following this success, performances were held at the Casa de Cultura and a new series was created in 2012 about an African slave.

José Andreas currently produces quality art in his studio, where watercolors of Paraty may be acquired or a new work may be ordered. The evenings are dedicated to music, accompanied by the voice of songstress Andrea Gatti at the popular Café Paraty.

Both as musician and painter, this talented artist attracts attention owing to his genuineness and dedication to his passions.
