The art of painting tiles and displaying them as decorations is ancient and has spread throughout the world. The Frenchman Elie Audoux who has lived in Paraty since 1993 stepped into this universe when he opened a shop with his mother, who was a skilled painter of tiles and currently has her work perpetuated in items containing street names, in Paraty’s historical town center.

This work requires creativity, talent and patience. In addition to the use of specific paints for hand-painted ceramics, the items are subsequently fired in ceramic kilns at 800 degrees in order to fix the colors that do not fade with time, even when subjected to sunshine and rain.

Countless designs on tiles, painted in a number of styles that please numerous tastes and are a great success, may be seen in this small shop, such as for example tiles painted with numbers for placing on houses to point out the address. Elie also receives orders for large panels or tiled billboards, which are much requested by the local retailers. Coats-of-arms are also frequently ordered from this artist who is skilled in drawing and painting, and who has exhibited pictures in Toulouse, France and in São Paulo.

Besides the traditional hand-painted tiles, he and his Brazilian wife have innovated in their art with the use of silk screen in several items. Another differential is contemporary art on the tiles, with exclusive abstract designs by the artist.
