Opening the way to a reading habit

Biblioteca Ary Parreiras was created by Dr. Emil de Castro, president of Fundação Mário Peixoto, and is located in Mangaratiba’s town center on the same street as Solar Barão de Sahy. The collection of over 14,000 items, some of which are 19-century rarities, assists students with their school research, encourages the reading habit by the local community who can borrow books free of charge, and welcomes visitors who enjoy the universe of literature in totally silent facilities.

The collection is divided into sections: Brazilian History, World History, Geography, Biographies, Theater, Cinema, Music, Sociology, Religion, Folklore, Teaching, Philosophy, Psychology, Sex and Ethics, Novels and Poetry, among others. There is also a collection from several countries, and novels in other languages such as English and French.

Fundação Mário Peixoto leads a number of projects to encourage and disseminate reading, providing new opportunities for contact with books at other venues. This is the case of Biblioteca Constantino Paleólogo in Itacuruçá and Biblioteca Rachel de Queiroz in Conceição de Jacareí. Other projects by the Foundation, such as Ler é Viver, have already taken reading to other areas such as Serra do Piloto and Muriqui, and should appear increasingly in the municipality’s public places, making the act of reading a day-to-day habit in the local population’s lives.
