The age-old art of hand embroidery is the main star in this proposal by Nina Silva, who has won over the town and a legion of admirers.

The 2011 disclosure of Concurso Bordados Poéticos was the catalyst. A new topic is selected every year. In 2011, this was Poetas de Paraty, followed by Cantigas Populares in 2012, with Obras dos Artistas Plásticos de Paraty in 2013 and Memória Afetiva of local venues viewed by photographers in 2014.

Creations are selected by a jury for the top three awards. This creative embroidery impresses viewers with the skill and beauty that it reflects. All the entries participate in an exhibition in which the public votes for fourth place.

The lively group is currently formed by twelve embroiderers from age 27 to 70, who get together every Saturday in different venues to read and discuss texts, and embroider, of course.

New members are constantly admitted into the group. Those who do not know how to embroider are given lessons at the meetings, which are warmly named Embroidered Conversations.

An experimental edition of 100 copies was made of a 2014 calendar with photos of the 12 best creations. They were sold out in two days and a 2015 calendar is being prepared. The group also publishes books on handicrafts, with the cover and pages composed of embroideries. It is fascinating to turn the pages and view the deftness with which the work with needle and thread designs a message.
