Café Pingado is located on one of Paraty’s busiest corners in the historical town center and is mandatory for all passers-by. The couple who own the business are watchful and ensure that the main fare of the house – coffee – is of excellent quality. This responsibility is assumed by the coffee serving husband, who is also a fan of this beverage, prepared in the shop from the Orfeu variety from the south of Minas Gerais and the Pessegueiro variety, also much awarded and milder. The coffee as well as its powder are sold in several unusual versions, in particular the “laced” version served by the house and coffee with milk. The first version takes a shot of cachaça or “pinga.”

In addition to the varied kinds of coffee, including the traditional percolated kind and even more elaborate beverages that include coffee, there are sweet and salt tidbits that are perfect for leisurely tasting. The recipes are all prepared with great care and with a commitment for using home-made goods. The Minas (white) cheese, for example, comes from nearby Cunha and is cured in the house to prepare pão de queijo. Typical sweets are also offered, such as the manuê de bacia (a cake prepared with treacle) and marzipan, similar to coconut quindim in a syrup with cloves.

Café Pingado also serves soups, such as pea, potato with celery, pumpkin with ginger and others ideal for colder evenings. The attractive pies and cakes are made to order in a number of flavors.

The environment is welcoming with its decoration full of small details that make a difference, such as the A gente se vê em Paraty (We’ll see you in Paraty) printed on the coffee cups, calling visitors to return.
