CASA LARANGEIRAS

A generous area especially for local culture

The town house sheltering this institution was built in 1822, and used to belong to the Larangeiras family who ran a general store there, and sold everything from nails to groceries. After the family’s male members died, the business was closed down and the old house was left derelict until 2006, when the local government expropriated it and restored the property, converting it into a folk culture attraction.

Casa Larangeiras is currently one of the town’s busiest cultural facilities, and it is managed by the local government through Fundação de Cultura de Angra dos Reis – Cultuar. It has spacious halls in its two storeys and has become an ideal area for local cultural events. Visual arts, photographic and local handicraft exhibitions are held here, as well as courses and workshops in several art segments, seminars and lectures for the community, besides rehearsals of the Coral da Cidade de Angra dos Reis and Orquestra Sinfônica de Angra dos Reis, among other events.

The house is located in the town center’s Praça Zumbi dos Palmares, and is a democratic area, comprising harmonious groups of artists of all kinds, such as musicians, sculptors, artisans, dancers, painters, playwrights, poets, actors, cultural producers and capoeira performers. The events and exhibitions provided to the public are entirely free of charge and are constantly being renewed. The intense programming may be viewed in Cultuar’s website or fan page.
