CENTRO CULTURAL CONSTANTINO COKOTÓS

The home of local culture

Previously known as Casa de Cultura do Abraão na Ilha Grande, this important cultural facility was officially given its new name at the request of the local inhabitants, in honor of the noteworthy Constantino Cokotós, a community reference who contributed with his two great passions: the boat Tenente Loretti and the music played by his band Prata da Casa, enhancing the region’s culture. Constantino Cokotós passed away in 2013 and is missed by everybody.

Centro Cultural Constantino Cokotós is one of the cultural tools under the responsibility of Fundação de Cultura de Angra dos Reis – Cultuar and makes a difference on the island, for promoting a number of exhibitions, artistic shows, lectures, workshops and other events, which benefit the local population and provide a cultural interchange, besides attracting a large contingent of visitors.

This cultural effort is under the direction of the communicative Adriano da Guia, who calls himself a cultural activist. He is also a teacher of capoeira and head of Liga Cultural Afro Brasileira, responsible for a number of projects put into practice. The premises also serve as the Arena Cultural da Ilha Grande, and provide free courses, on various days and times, on capoeira, ciranda, theater, literature, handicrafts, chess and cinema. Free of charge events such as exhibitions of photographs, visual arts and handicrafts, cultural dance presentations, music and theater also captivate tourists. During a season with the Viagem à Baía de Angra performance, a large screen was put up with an English translation of the dialogues displayed on the stage.
