CIA DA LUA

Recollecting Angra dos Reis stories and traditions

With a record of 20 years on the road and plenty of talent, the Cia da Lua theater troupe arose with the staging of the Viagem à Baía dos Reis performance, which depicts the history of Angra dos Reis from the arrival of the Portuguese to its folk traditions. The script was later submitted to several adaptations and was renamed Viagem à Terra dos Magos, continuing its great success and remaining a box office hit to these days.

The Cia da Lua troupe has always been dedicated to historical research, the retrieval of culture and tradition, and to folk icons in creating their shows. Many of these describe the legends of Angra dos Reis and refer to its historical monuments, such as the Lenda da Bica da Carioca and the História do Chafariz da Saudade, among others. A number of other popular plays enrich the group’s resume, in particular Pompeia, o Poeta Inquieto and As Aventuras de Tico e Teco, monologues staged at the FITA – in which the actor interacts with images from two projectors. Both plays have texts and direction by Zequinha Miguel.

Over the last three years (2011/2014) on Easter Saturdays, Cia da Lua has presented A Vida e Paixão de Cristo play on a large stage assembled in Praça da Matriz, in an original version that inserted several symbols of local folklore into the script. With a special sound track, musical direction by conductor Saraiva and a cast of 80 local actors involved, the performance is tremendously popular.

Cia da Lua has also been a component of the Ponto de Cultura project since 2008, and holds a number of training courses for theater and TV performers, in addition to audiovisual production courses for children and teenagers in the region’s communities. In fact, preparing an audience, especially the new generations is one of the key purposes of this group of actors, which is fully aware of the great value of their town’s culture and history.
