COLÉGIO NAVAL
A beautiful and renowned educational institution
This extremely attractive architectural project known as the Colégio Naval was begun in 1911 and concluded in 1914. It was the seat of the Naval College for decades, later known as the midshipmen’s school, until in 1951 it was definitively designated the Colégio Naval, an educational institution to prepare young seamen for their admission into the Naval College’s Corps of Midshipmen, where officers of the Brazilian Navy are trained.
The young men admitted into the College by means of public examinations are given a formal and high-level boarding school education for three years. Besides subjects as found in Middle School, there are also several sporting and extra-curricular practices focused on intellectual, physical, moral and disciplinary training for all the students. Sporting activities are numerous: athletic field events, fencing, football, judo, basketball, volleyball, swimming, rowing, sailing, canoeing, triathlon and target practice. Extra-curricular activities are performed in a number of groups: sailing, canoeing, diving, languages, information technology, photography, martial arts and music, among others. There are also events such as art exhibitions, music festivals and literary competitions.
The Naval College has an auditorium that can seat 668 people and is employed for celebrations in the institution, graduations, group anniversaries, lectures and music and theater performances. It also boasts an ample swimming pool structure, sporting fields and courts, library, multimedia facilities, several kinds of vessels, a special building for the student body, transit hotel and state-of-the-art education and living facilities.
Besides the families that visit students during weekends and commemorative events, tourists and school groups can also arrange visits in order to come and see the buildings and their history. Guided visits include lectures, videos, tours throughout the compound and the Naval Museum, where the collection of fine uniforms and miniature ships abound, among items of historical value. Visitors should pay attention and not use flip-flops or Bermuda shorts, mini-skirts or any other attire inappropriate to military institutions.
Over the course of the years, many young people have graduated, and currently this institution harbors roughly 680 students. The Naval College’s façade displays a welcoming phrase, its motto: the “Navy’s Expectation” (Esperança da Armada) and its pillar of conduct; “Discipline – Education – Love for Brazil” (Disciplina – Educação – Amor ao Brasil). It is excellent training for the numerous generations who have followed the career and discovered various opportunities for professional development.
