CORAL DA CIDADE DE ANGRA DOS REIS

Singing to the memory of the great Galloway

Divulgação: Coral da Cidade de Angra dos Reis

Founded in late 1968 by the late and well known author, actor, singer and musician Gerard Galloway, this Choir is one the reasons for great pride by the town of Angra dos Reis. Formerly known as Coral do CENIAR, it was assumed by the town in 1998 and was renamed Coral da Cidade de Angra dos Reis. On the decease of conductor Galloway in 1999, the choir’s leadership was taken over by conductor Saraiva, who has proceeded with the praiseworthy efforts of the founding musician.

Currently, the choir has 36 members, a pianist and several interns, all of whom were admitted by means of public exams and hearings. The choir’s members are paid a minimum salary and perform during the town’s major festivities and in special concerts, and also participate in three annual choir encounters that take place in other states of Brazil. Their repertory includes modern music, folk, classical, renaissance and baroque music. The conductor also works with a children’s choir and his methodology in this case starts with the basics in music. He teaches them to think of musical notes by means of hand gestures.

The Coral da Cidade has a string of achievements, including three operas. One of them, Nações Indígenas, has a repertory of indigenous music and over two thousand performances. It has also shared the stage with Orquestra Sinfônica de Angra dos Reis and in certain presentations the adult choir joins the children’s choir, providing greater emotion for the audience.

In order to listen to this group informally away from the major events, simply schedule a visit and attend the frequent rehearsals held during the week at Casa Larangeiras. This will suffice to be captivated by the moving efforts that have attracted an increasing legion of fans.
