ECOMUSEU ILHA GRANDE
Immaterial heritage is valued here
The brilliant action that created Ecomuseu Ilha Grande is part of an extension program by UERJ – Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro, which since being implemented has produced numerous results and solutions to the benefit of the Ilha Grande population and to its environment in particular.
With the commendable mission of informing and educating residents and visitors alike on the importance of preserving the island’s extensive historical and ecological heritage, Ecomuseu Ilha Grande consists of an ample compound spread out in four separate segments: Museu do Cárcere – located in the buildings that remained from the former penitentiary; Museu do Meio Ambiente – focused on nature, its biodiversity and caiçara traditions; Centro Multimídia – in charge of records and research on the island’s history and the owner of a vast documentary collection of photos and videos; and Parque Botânico – which performs research, detects and catalogues the island’s rich flora.
The Ecomuseu is constantly in activity and counts with an ample cross-functional team that interacts with the community to implement a series of incredible projects. One of these projects enabled inhabitants of the Dois Rios village to create handcrafted items from solid residues, by means of recycling workshops. These items are sold in the museum and create income for their creators. This action has solved the problem of pet containers that were previously discarded anywhere and are currently handed over to these artisans.
Another specific project is the Museólogas de Família, by means of which the museum performs actions of interest to the community and visits homes to interview inhabitants that share their stories, all of which are recorded on video and compose a broad record of the local identity.
The Ecomuseu performs a number of other educational activities such as workshops, storytelling, movie sessions and scheduled guided tours.
The road to the museum follows the beautiful Abraão-Dois Rios path of roughly 11 km, which may involve two and a half hours of walking. In special cases it will be required to previously arrange use of the institution’s bus, which has specific days and hours to cover this route and is used preferably for senior citizens and school groups.
During the high season such as in carnival, The official website displays a number of photos and videos prepared, as well as details of Ecomuseu activities and projects. This will certainly serve to encourage visitors to cross the Ilha Grande bay and have a close look at this vast culture and the natural attractions available.
