With more than 20 years on the road and a successful track record, this theater company from Angra dos Reis justifies its name, which means ‘royal eagle’ in the tupi-guarani language. The group’s trade mark is in-depth research into folk culture and street theater, influenced by the Revolucena company – from which several members came – and Augusto Boal’s Teatro do Oprimido.

Cutucurim is composed of artists that complement each other and take turns in the deft creation of texts, in directing, composing music and acting, with the assistance of other actors and directors in the casts of their plays and theatrical performances. The plays are intense, with great interaction and contact with the public, during which actors employ a broad dialogue including the strength of theater and their music with songs and instruments.

Among the successful numbers there are O Piolho, a caolha, a morte e as quatro irmãs que não deviam falar, a performance for the entire family based on folklore, Dá licença minha gente, inspired by Northeastern poet Patativa do Assaré, O Auto do trabalhador, a mixture of folk icons with modern times, and O Vaqueiro que não sabia mentir, which employs humor to highlight traditions in folklore. Having held performances in major Brazilian cities as well as overseas, the group has been awarded over 100 prizes and is always present in the chief domestic and international street theater festivals, and always in the main Angra dos Reis festivities.

It also prepares new generations by teaching young people in specialized theater workshops, stage lighting and other activities related to theater performances.
