GRUPO TEATRAL REVOLUCENA & ZEQUINHA MIGUEL

Literally a revolution in the scenes

The group founded in 1979 and headed by Zequinha Miguel is a pioneer in thinking and producing theater performances. When it was created, the country was undergoing difficult times and the group’s members, all of them politically committed, radically changed the town’s cultural scenario.

One of the most remarkable works, serving as an example of the positive outcome by these actions was staging the performance of Serra-Serra-Serrador, on which occasion the actors took to the streets and stopped at certain spots in order to “saw” historical monuments and announce their death. During the mise-en-scene the public was requested to undersign a list requiring the preservation and official protection of those buildings.

Besides being awarded prizes and praised by the critics, Revolucena is the subject of Master’s degree dissertations and served as a “father” for other theater groups in Angra dos Reis. One of Revolucena’s most successful plays is Viagem à Baía dos Reis, with Cia da Lua on stage and directed by Zequinha. The performance is over 20 years old and is staged to this day, having been seen by thousands of people. Staging in schools includes a questionnaire and an intense exchange of ideas.

Ideas are plentiful in the mind of teacher Zequinha Miguel, who has been carrying out a fantastic task with the new generation for years. The Teatro Cidadão course that he created and directs at the Casa de Cultura teaches over 80 pupils every year, and has trained approximately 2000 young actors.
The Revolucena theater group has staged successful plays such as A Conquista do Jardim das Delícias and Viagem à Terra dos Magos, which, like the others, have the raising of questions in common. This is a trade mark of Zequinha Miguel, who in addition to being a theater director may be referred to as a “multi-artist” by virtue of his ample spectrum of interests in the cultural field, detected in his ideas and actions.

Whether by means of the Revolucena group or through a solo career, Zequinha Miguel and his vibrant personality always exert an active voice in the forefront of movements exalting his town’s history and cultural values, and those of the entire local community.
