Art and devotion

The visual artist known for his paintings, predominantly of the historical heritage and seascapes, was born in Paraty and came to Angra dos Reis as a child, already with a taste for drawing. His love of painting appeared on seeing the artist Estevão at work in the open air on one of the town’s beautiful landscapes. Ivo was impressed not only with the work’s beauty but in particular with Estevão’s elegance, who painted wearing a suit and tie without staining his clothes. Another artist whom he much admired was the highly regarded Felício D’Andrea, who later became his mentor and teacher. Ivo recalls that he read three newspapers every day, had a very open mind and gave his pupil precious advice.

On viewing the works of impressionist master Monet, of whom he is a confessed fan, Ivo went ahead with his art creations and fashioned a successful career that includes awards, successful exhibitions and the satisfaction of conveying his expertise to a large number of pupils in the drawing and painting courses that he has been giving since 1995.

Among the exhibitions that have marked his career, one of the most famous was held in Brasilia in 1981, in which he sold all of his art creations. Another event was the tribute on his 44 years of activities, sponsored by Fundação Mário Peixoto from Mangaratiba with a beautiful exhibition held at the Solar Barão de Sahy. In early 2014, he held the Ivo dos Remédios – 45 Anos Dedicados à Arte exhibition in his beloved Angra dos Reis, with 70 of his works on show at the local Casa de Cultura.

Now 72 years of age, Ivo dos Remédios has no fixed studio to receive visitors. However, his passion is still painting in the open air, which is likely to provide visitors with the unique experience of arranging an encounter with the artist in his live scenario.
