MUSEU MUNICIPAL DE MANGARATIBA & MUSEU DAS CONCHAS

An admirable collection of attractions in the same cultural area

Both museums were inaugurated in 2012, and are located in the beautiful mansion of Portuguese-influenced architecture known as Solar Barão de Sahy, serving as cultural facilities maintained by Fundação Mário Peixoto.

The collection housed in the Museu Municipal consists of a number of historical items, old photographs, period furniture, resolutions by the Town Hall and documents that hold Mangaratiba’s memory. This plentiful material is permanently exhibited and available for visits and investigation by researchers.

The Museu das Conchas, as the name suggests, has an enormous variety of shell specimens, some of which brought from great distances, such as one of roughly one meter in length and weighing 157 kg, from Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The items exhibited belong to collector and researcher Dr. Carlitos, and fascinate visitors.

As a point of honor, a part of this ample town house is dedicated to the illustrious Mário José Breves Rodrigues Peixoto, born in Mangaratiba in 1908 and known internationally as Mário Peixoto, script writer and director who also wrote poems and books. The museum exhibits several personal belongings, old projectors, photos, several of his written works and frames from his well-known Limite motion picture filmed in Mangaratiba in 1930.

The property has a small room for motion pictures and a larger one solely to hold exhibitions, which is much used by local artists. On the first floor and facing the street, a small shop was recently opened to sell books and local handicrafts, many of which were produced by pupils enrolled in workshops held by Fundação Mário Peixoto.

The property is also a neighbor of two striking urban facilities: a pleasant garden with sculptures donated by local artists and Beco da Poesia, inaugurated in 2011 and an attraction owing to its long corridor from Rua Coronel Moreira da Silva to the seafront, with its walls decorated with poetry from a large variety of poets and styles. To complete the scene, benches and public lighting have been installed, allowing the public to stop in time and be carried to the dream-like world of poetry.
