Headed by Vitor Rocha, a caiçara, biologist and descendant of a quilombo community member, this organization arose driven by the intention of salvaging caiçara culture, implementing actions to contribute with environmental preservation and social activities, in particular with young people and senior citizens. This entity is an NGO with its base and field of action in the Frade region and surroundings, but the OCA also has a base in Casa Larangeiras, a well known Angra dos Reis cultural center under the administration of Fundação de Cultura de Angra dos Reis – Cultuar.

Among environmental activities, actions of greater relevance include group efforts in cleaning beaches and rivers, whereby in addition to the collection of refuse, awareness actions take place with the region’s inhabitants and tourists, stressing the importance of not leaving refuse in these locations. Ecological hikes with the same purpose are always organized along the paths that lead to the region’s natural beauty spots. The group is chiefly composed of young people who usually celebrate with a get-together after each assignment. To this end they organize a Luau da Oca event including a bonfire and a guitar, and of course the place will be impeccably clean when it ends.

Among actions of a social nature, the public is summoned to donate blood or to visit old folks in homes and to spend an afternoon with wonderful conversations, gathering experiences. Another successful project is Cine Argumento: film sessions for young people followed by debates.

A number of events created by OCA and with support by Local Government and sympathizers, have been continued and won over regular well-wishers. The Caiçara do Frade Festival is such an event; it is free of charge and has had three editions. It extends over three days with plenty of music, jongo dance performances and typical food.

Organização de Caiçaras e Amigos is always on the move. Its charismatic and articulate organizer uses social networks extensively for his well meaning group efforts, and visits, ideas, donations and support are welcome.
