ORQUESTRA SINFÔNICA DE ANGRA DOS REIS – OSAR

Many years of existence for an effort worthy of applause

The old dream of witnessing the birth of an orchestra in the town came true in 2008 by means of a collective effort, in particular from its three founders: Karla Coelho, Moacir Saraiva and Gilmara Melo.
Orquestra Sinfônica de Angra dos Reis – OSAR is now six years old and is such a popular project that even in its first year of activity it carried out an impeccable effort and held memorable concerts, one with the Coral da Cidade de Angra dos Reis – the local choir – and won over the respect and admiration not only of the municipality but also new partnerships and numerous fans.

The orchestra’s artistic director is conductor Saraiva, who also commands the Coral da Cidade de Angra dos Reis. The choir also relies on other well known teachers for its members’ musical guidance. Every member attends practical and theoretical lessons, instrument training and orchestra practice.

In 2009, OSAR was awarded Prêmio Rio Sociocultural and was selected as one of the top ten cultural actions in the State of Rio de Janeiro, among 283 enrolled entities. In addition to public recognition, the award was a blessing, as the prize enabled the acquisition of more musical instruments and the provision of free classes to its pupils,

From then on, many other important awards followed as well as funds and sponsorships for the orchestra’s upkeep, which aspires to form teaching groups in less favored communities, training older students as multipliers and developing new talents.

There are a number of presentations in YouTube for those who are still unaware of the work by OSAR. The programs regarding the coming concerts may be viewed in the orchestra’s blog and the many rehearsals can also be attended by local residents or visitors, who will certainly be affected by the project’s intentions.
